MAJOR AREAS OF RESEARCH INTEREST:
- Microvascular responses to diabetes mellitus-merit review, 1990-93 Microvascular physiologic and anatomic responses of the guinea pig to experimental arenavirus infection, 1987-1990
- In vitro assessment of macromolecular permeability across biologic layers in normal and abnormal states-VACO
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES:
Microcirculatory physiology and pathophysiology; in vitro studies of water and macromolecular transport across basement membrane and endothelial cells in normal state, chemical diabetes and aging; reversibility of changes by hydrazine derivatives; extracellular matrix; glycation; passive transport; capillary permeability; hydraulic conductance; early diagnosis of diabetic nephropathy; cultural factors in adaptation to chronic illness.
STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH RESEARCH:
Learning of techniques including lymph flux analysis and in vitro assessment of macromolecular permeability across biologic layers.
